SecondLook is an iPhone app that reads a used car's diagnostic data through an OBD2 adapter and turns it into a report. We built it to collect as little as possible. There are no accounts, no ads, and we don't sell or share data with anyone for advertising.
Car data and reports stay on your phone
- The app talks to your OBD2 adapter over its Wi-Fi network. It only reads data; it never changes settings on the car or clears codes.
- Everything read from the car, including the VIN, trouble codes, and test-drive readings, is processed on your phone. Reports are saved on your phone, and in your own iPhone backup if you use iCloud Backup or back up to a computer. We never receive them, and SecondLook has no server that stores them.
- You can delete a report at any time: open it and tap Delete report, or touch and hold it in "Your reports". Deleting the app deletes all of its reports from the phone; copies in an older iPhone backup remain until that backup is replaced or deleted.
Local network access
iPhone asks whether SecondLook may find devices on your local network. The app needs this to reach your adapter. It doesn't look for or contact any other device.
Anonymous usage data
To learn whether SecondLook is useful, the app sends anonymous usage events to TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service based in Germany. The events say how far a scan got, for example: scan started, connected to the adapter, quick scan done, test drive started or finished, report built, report unlocked or deleted, and your answer to "Did this report change your offer?". With each event the app also sends general information such as the app version, iPhone model, iOS version, language, region, and time zone.
The app does not send your VIN, location, adapter address, report contents, or anything you type. Events are tied only to a scrambled (salted and hashed) form of a random identifier that Apple generates for this app; it can't be used to identify you or to track you across other apps.
Diagnostics you choose to send
After a scan, the app keeps a diagnostics file on your phone: the connection attempts, the raw replies from your adapter (which include the VIN), and the test-drive readings. It is only sent if you tap Send diagnostics and choose how to send it, for example by email to support@secondlookscan.com. We use it only to fix the problem you reported. Each new scan replaces the file.
Purchases
Unlocking a full report is an in-app purchase handled by Apple. We never see your name, Apple ID, or payment details. The app keeps Apple's transaction number on your phone so it knows which report you unlocked. Refunds are handled by Apple.
Shared report links
If you tap Share, the app creates a link that contains the whole report, including the VIN. The report is stored inside the link itself, in the part after the "#" that browsers never send to our website, so we don't receive or store it. Anyone you send the link to can read the report, and can pass it on.
This website
- If you email us to join the beta, we keep your email address and the type of phone you mention, and use them only to invite you to the beta and tell you when SecondLook launches. Email us to be removed.
- The site is hosted by Cloudflare, which processes visitors' IP addresses to deliver and protect the site. Cloudflare also forwards email sent to our addresses to our inbox.
Children
SecondLook is meant for adults buying a car and is not directed at children.
